Able Seaman WILLIAM BIBBY died on 9 July 1917 while serving on the battleship HMS Vanguard. At about 11.20pm on 9 July 1917 Vanguard was destroyed by a series of explosions while at anchor in Scapa Flow in the Orkneys, killing all but two of the 845 members of her crew who were aboard at the time. It is believed that the explosions began in one of the midship magazines.
He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
