Bethell, Edwin

War Service:
Edwin Bethell Chief Engineer, Royal Naval Reserve. His ship was HMS India, a former liner hired by the Admiralty for use as an armed merchant cruiser, and he died 8 August 1915 aged 54 along with 10 officers and 149 ratings. When HMS India was torpedoed and sunk by the German Submarine U22 off the Island of Helligvaer, near Bodo, Norway. 12 bodies were recovered and buried in Norway.

He was lost at sea and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, which commemorates 8,514 sailors who lost their lives in WW1.

He was remembered on the memorial at St Margaret's, Lee.

Details:
He was the husband of Elizabeth Bethell of 70 Boyne Road, Lewisham.
