Benns, Arthur Lionel

Dates:
Summer of 1891 to 12 May 1915.
War Service:
Second Lieutenant ARTHUR LIONEL BENNS of 1/5 Battalion the London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) was killed in action on 1 July 1916 at Gommecourt.

He enlisted in ‘P’ Company of the LRB on 28 April 1910. He was wounded in the Second Battle of Ypres in March 1915 and appointed lance corporal on He was commissioned into the 3/5 battalion London Regiment on 27 September 1915 and on 5 March 1916 he was transferred to ‘C’ company of the 1/5 Londons.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.

Location of Memorial:
He is remembered on thememorials at Haberdashers’ Aske’s school in New Cross and the church of St Catherine, Hatcham.

Details:
He was born in the summer of 1891 and lived at 45 Brusfield Street, New Cross He was educated at Christ’s Hospital and Haberdashers' Aske’s.
