Private 23044 GORDON VICTOR BENFIELD, ‘D’ Company, 26th Battalion the Royal Fusiliers died on 5 February 1917, aged 19. The 26th was raised in the City of London on 17 July 1915 by the Lord Mayor and was composed in the main of bank clerks and accountants.

He is buried in Klein-Vierstraat British Cemetery, Heuvelland, Belgium

He is remembered on the memorial at St Bartholomew’s church, Sydenham.

Details:
He was born in Kingham Hill, Oxfordshire in the autumn of 1897. He was the son of Tom Barker Benfield and Ellen Benfield, of 49, Homecroft Road, Sydenham.
