Lieutenant JAMES ERNEST KIRKHAM BELL of 8th battalion Border Regiment died of wounds in the Empire Hospital, Vincent Square, Westminster on 5 August 1916. He was one ten officers of the Border Regiment wounded on 3 July 1916.
He was buried in Ladywell cemetery on 10 August 1916.
He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, but is not clear how his name came to be recorded on that memorial when he has a known grave.

He is remembered on the war memorial at St Dunstan's College and also in the pages of the History of The Old Dunstonian Rugby Football Club.
Details:
He was 20. He was the son Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ernest Bell, of 139, Culverley Rd., Catford. He was educated at Holbeach Elementary school and St Dunstan’s College in Catford which he attended from 1909-1911. On leaving school he worked as a junior clerk with Tabernacle & Son of Hart Street, WC.
