Albert or Bertie Baker was the son of Harry [1856 - ?] and Sarah [1857 - 1900] Baker. He was 6th child of 9 born to the couple originally from Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire. He like 7 of his other siblings was born in Sydenham and was baptised 15 October 1893 at St Michael and All Angels, Sydenham and can be found on the war memorial there. Also he worked at the South Suburban Gas Works, Bell Green, Lower Sydenham and can be found on the war memorial there.

He enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment in 27 April 1915 as did his 3 other brothers Sidney, Ernest Alfred and William Harry one of them sent this card to Bella [1887 - 1974] their sister. Albert Baker was a Private [Service No: 1182] in the 1st Battalion East Surrey Regiment. He went missing during July 1916 at the Battle of the Somme and was presumed dead 23 July 1916 aged 24. He is also commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial [Pier and Face 6 B and 6 C] with others that fell at the Battle of the Somme and have no known grave.
