He was 43 and worked for the Admiralty as a labourer. He was the husband of Mrs Alice Bain of 6 Hathway Street, Nunhead. He was posthumously awarded the King’s Commendation for Brave Conduct for his work that night. The award was announced in the London Gazette of 27 May 1941.
