War Service:
Second Lieutenant CLEMENT AYRES of the 12 Battalion, the Rifle Brigade was killed in action on the Menin Road outside Ypres on 20 September 1917. He joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment in October 1914 and attained the rank of sergeant before being Gazetted into the Rifle Brigade on 29 May 1917.
He has no known grave and is commemorated on Tyne Cot memorial.

He is remembered on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.
Details:
He was 25 years old, the eldest son of Joseph and Florence Ayres, of 8, Romer Place Lewisham. He was educated at Lewisham Bridge School and before enlisting worked as a chauffeur.
