Second Lieutenant WILLIAM ERNEST AVERY of ‘B’ Company, 16th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers died on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme

Location of Memorial:
He is remembered on the memorial at St Mildred’s church, Lee.

Details:
He was 26, the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Avery, of 2, London Lane, Bromley. He was qualified in Mining Engineering and was a Member of the Institute of Mining Engineers. He was employed as under-manager of Bewicke Maine Colliery, Durham.
