St Stephen's WW1 Details of War Casualties

Gunner 56217 ARTHUR PERCY ALSON of the 25th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery died on 28 July 1917. He is buried in Canada Farm cemetery, North of Ypres and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Second Lieutenant CLEMENT AYRES of the 12 Battalion, the Rifle Brigade, died on 20 September 1917, aged 25. He was the son of Joseph and Florence Ayres, of 8, Romer Place Lewisham. He is remembered on the Tyne Cot memorial and at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Captain LASCELLES DE BARRY BARNETT of the 6th Battalion Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) died on 3 July 1917, aged 37. He was the son of the late Malcolm and Mary Barnett, of 51, Kidbrook Park Rd., Blackheath. He is buried in Serre Road No.2 cemetery on the Somme and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Lieutenant JOHN HENRY BOOTHBY of ‘U’ Battery, Royal Horse Artillery was killed on 23 July 1916. He was the son of Henry Vernon Boothby and Augusta Boothby, of Point House Club, Blackheath. He is buried in Dartmoor cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, near Albert and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Rifleman 593572 JAMES HENRY BOYLIN of the 1st/18th Battalion London Regiment (London Irish Rifles) was killed in action on 29 November 1917. He is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval and at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Rifleman R/38731 JAMES ROBERT BROAD of the 12th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps was killed in action on 28 November 1917, aged 32. He was the husband of Alice Broad, of 5, Jerrard St., Lewisham. He is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial at Louverval and at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Lance Corporal 23213 CECIL ERNEST COVILL of 2nd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment died of his wounds on 4 December 1917 aged 21. He was the son of Frederick and Deborah Covill, of 13 Brookbank Rd., Lewisham. He is buried in Ypres Reservoir cemetery and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Sergeant11012 WILLIAM THOMAS COVILL of the 1st Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers died on 25 April 1915, the first day of the Allied landing on Gallipoli. He was 38. The 1st Battalion were the first unit to land on V beach and suffered heavy casualties from Turkish machine gun fire, many men never reaching the beach. He was the son of William Thomas and Emily Covill, of Acorn House, Shrubbery Rd., Lewisham. He is remembered on Special Memorial A29 in V Beach cemetery, Gallipoli and at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Private G/8339 JAMES SMITH EASTGATE of the 11th Battalion Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) died on 7 October 1916, aged 33. He was the son of James Eastgate, of 12 Park St., Lewisham and husband of Annie Eastgate, of 13 Horten St., Lewisham. He is remembered on the Thiepval Mamorial to the Missing of the Somme and at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Company Sergeant Major ALBERT ARTHUR GILES of the 20th Battalion the London Regiment died on 5 December 1917, aged 25. He was the son of William and Annie Giles, of 61 Algernon Rd., Lewisham. He is buried in Achiet - le - Grand Communal cemetery extension near Arras and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Corporal 2112 ALEXANDER DONALD GLASCODINE of 1st/20th Battalion London Regiment died aged 20 on 25/09/1915. He was the son of Richard T. and Norah Glascodine, of 38, Clarendon Rd., Lewisham. He is remembered on panel 130 of the Loos Memorial and at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Corporal 2951 EDWARD ARTHUR WILLIAM HARLOCK of the 1st/21st Battalion London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles) died on 23 May 1916, aged 27. He was the son of Arthur Charles and Annie Elizabeth Harlock, of 149 George Lane, Lewisham. He is remembered on the Arras memorial and at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Private 2509 STANLEY JOHN HOARE of the 20th Battalion London Regiment was killed in action on 26 May 1915 aged 20. He was the son of John and Florence Hoare, of 70 Shell Rd., Lewisham. He is remembered on the Le Touret memorial and at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street, St John's in Lewisham Way and St Cyprian's in Brockley.

Lance Corporal 17313 HENRY HURLL of "A" Company, 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment died on 9 April 1917, the first day of the Battle of Arras. He was 21. He was the son of Mrs. Jane Hurll of Brookbank Rd., Lewisham. At 5.30 AM on 9 April the battalion launched an attack on the Hindenburgh Line about 2,000 yards away. After heavy fighting they reached the German wire but were unable to advance further. Eventually they were forced to fall back and consolidate a position somewhat short of their original objectives. In all the battalion casualties amounted to 14 officers and 328 other ranks. He is buried in Neuville - Vitasse Road cemetery, 6km South of Arras and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Private 982 RICHARD JERRARD of the Essex Yeomanry attached to the 8th Squadron of the Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) died on 21 August 1916, aged 26. He was the son of William and Claudine Mary Levers Jerrard, of "Fairview," Vicars Hill, Lewisham. He is buried in Mesnil Communal cemetery extension, a few kilometres North of Albert and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Private 56634 GEORGE EDWARD LARKING of 1st Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers died on 28 August 1916 aged 19. He was the son of Robert and Annie Larking of 44, Elswick Rd., Lewisham. He is buried in Delville Wood cemetery and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street. His brother William was killed on 1 July 1916.

Private G/8103 WILLIAM HENRY LARKING of 2nd Battalion Middlesex Regiment died on 1 July 1916 (the first day of the Battle of the Somme) aged 24. He was the son of Robert and Annie Larking of 44, Elswick Rd., Lewisham. He was born at Greenwich. He is buried in Ovillers Military cemetery and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street. His brother George was killed on 28 August in the fighting for Delville Wood.

Rifleman 2948 THEODORE LEONARD MARTIN of 21st Battalion London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles) died on 6 April 1915, aged 25. He was the son of Charles Henry and Alice Lucy Martin. He is buried in Bethune Town cemetery and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Second Lieutenant EDWARD CHARLES MAXWELL PALMER of the 13th Battalion Royal Fusiliers died on 23 April 1917 while serving with the 11th Trench Mortar Battery. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial and at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Sergeant 2667 EDMUND WALTER JOLIET POTTER of the 2nd Battalion Honourable Artillery Company died on 24 October 1916, aged 29. In civilian life he was a chartered accountant. He was the son of Edmund C. and May V. Potter, of Lewisham and husband of Hilda May Potter of 47, Blackheath Park. He is buried in Berks cemetery extension, near Messines and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Second Lieutenant NORMAN HALE TALBOT who originally served with the Honourable Artillery Company died on 24 August 1916 while seconded to the 5th Battalion Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. He was 26. He was the son of Alfred George and Frances Hannah Talbot, of 12, Lewisham Hill. He had also served in South Africa in 1914 with South African Forces. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme and at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.

Lance Corporal 632038 HARRY WHELAN of the 20th Battalion London Regiment died on 30 August 1918. He was the son of Mrs. T. Whelan, of 13, Granville Rd., Lewisham. He is buried in Gomiecourt South cemetery, near Bapaume and he is commemorated on the memorial at St Stephen’s church Lewisham High Street.
