Leonhard was born 22 March 1922 in Berlin, Germany. In 1938 he applied to go to America but this was refused. Leonhard was sent to Britain on a children’s transport ships and on 23rd October 1939 he was granted exemption from internment on the grounds: This person is a Jewish refugee from Nazi oppression. His parents are in Belgium. Has no passport, came on a children's transport. States father came from Poland, mother came from Romania. Has tried to enlist. Says ‘Germany kicked me out so I want to join up and show my gratitude to the country that has given me refuge.’ It states in the document that he was a student of Electrical Engineering living at 17 St David’s Road, Southampton with his cousin R Barnett a tailor and had been offered a job in the drawing office of Portsmouth Electricity.
All finally seemed to be well but from the website [http://www.avotaynu.com/nu11.htm ]. This describes how a relative of Leonhard’s tried for 21 years to find out what happened to him and his family. In 1982 he received a letter from a distant cousin telling how in 1937 his father received a telegram from Leonhard’s father asking if his son [Hardy] could come and stay with them in England? So he did but after the war started life for refugees became difficult and Leonhard was examine for exemption from interment. He would have been pleased that this was granted but the downside was he could not live within 20 miles of the coast. So as the site tells alternative employment and accommodation had to be found for him. This was at a ‘Jewish Factory’ in South London [Lewisham] and the owners were to look after him. Sadly Leonhard died when a German Bomber discharged his load on returning home. The brick built shelter took a hit and he died with 35 other people in or around the Albion Way shelter, The website Mokotow.net tells Leonhard’s story and how after the war his parent’s had survived by being hidden in Vichy controlled France. They contacted the English based family for the return of their son only to discover he had died. They and their cousin’s health declined and the parents died in Paris, France.

* Details added to CWGC Civilian War Dead volume entry from Lewisham Borough records of WW2 in Lewisham Archives
This list is for 39 people not 36 as on the official records but Florence Elizabeth and William George Foster are on the CWGC as having died at the Albion Way Shelter, but the archive records has their place of death as 151 Lewisham High Street, their home, not the shelter. Also Frances Jane Hitchcock on the CWGC as having died at 5 Jerrard Street but the archive record has the place of death as Albion Way Shelter. On the same night 5 Jerrard Street did suffer a direct hit and there was a fatality. So Hitchcock has probably been miss recorded on a busy night.
Sadly there are 5 unidentified burials 2 male and 3 female.
