History:
Presented to the Council on 30 May 1916 by Mrs Charles Norfolk the widow of the late Alderman Norfolk “ for the inscription thereon of the names of the citizens of the Borough of Deptford who fell defending the British Empire in the Great War, 1914”. It was said at the time, As it was impossible to carry out the donor’s wish only the following words were inscribed.

1939-1945
To the Eternal Memory
Of the Citizens of the
BOROUGH OF DEPTFORD
Who gave their Lives in the Cause
Of Honour and Freedom in the
TWO WORLD WARS
And in Grateful Remembrance
Of All who Served
Their Name Liveth for Evermore

Ceremonies: The memorial was unveiled on 22 March 1921 by the Mayor of Deptford, Walter H. Green, J.P.
