On 19 March 1941 London suffered one of the worst raids of the war to date. Fire destroyed about 70-80% of the buildings on the 35 acre site, a major store depot for the Royal Navy. The yard was hit by 11 high explosive bombs as well as oil bombs and hundreds of incendiaries. There were about 150 fire watchers on duty but they were unable to contain the spread of the flames. Eventually a hundred fire appliances were needed to deal with the fires.

On 16 August 1944 a V1 flying bomb crashed into the yard, still not operational after the fires of March 1941, killing seven and injuring 74.
