In the early hours of 26 July 1944, deep into the blitz over London, Lewisham Hospital was bombed with a V1 Flying Bomb, with direct hits destroying what was then its D and E wards, the Registrar's Office and the library. The raid that night was one of the worst of the year in South London, and while there were a number of near misses, Lewisham Hospital was the only hospital to be directly hit. 70 patients and staff were injured and three died.
